Metamorphosis: The Kane Powell Reunion Story

Author, Lei Nguyen and Allison Peart | 11/1/2021

On September 17, 2019, Kane Stephen Powell took a brave action by completing a “Miracle Messages Referral Form. Though he knew very little about Miracle Messages, he placed his trust in the organization, his last hope to locate and reunite with his mother and siblings.

The first message he sent represents a tidal wave of faith, forgiveness, renewal, and love for the new profound future.

Later, a group of USC students and Mark Askins, the Lead Detective for Miracle Messages, decided to work together and conducted a variety of searches until they were able to locate and speak with Kane’s mother, Trudy. She began to cry uncontrollably when informed about the message that her son, Kane, had left to reconnect with her.

According to Trudy’s words, ever since her son left, a huge piece of her heart had been missing. She had been actively looking for him for years without success. Kane did reach out to her about 20 years ago through phone, but disappeared again shortly thereafter.

Miracle Messages has since then facilitated communications via text between Kane and Trudy. The following is the first of these messages.

My Dearest Kane,

How thrilled I am to have heard from you again

I thought this day may never come.

I want you to know I love and accept you wherever you are.

You have 2 Nephews & 4 Niece added to the family since our last conversation.

We would all like the chance to get to know you.

Several weeks after the initial contact, Kevin and Jess received a call from Trudi indicating that she had been in regular contact with Kane through phone and that he was flying out to see the family the following week. Trudi shared that Kane had begun a metamorphosis since they’d reconnected, commenting:

“He has said some of the sweetest things that a child could ever say to their mom…

“I want to give you hope and encouragement to continue your work. It has really been a life-changing event in my life…I had given up hope of ever seeing my child again…”

“…If I was with you, I would give you all a big hug and bake you all some cookies. You are doing God's work, reconnecting people with their families…”

Flash forward to August 2021, Kane is now living with his family and thriving in his new life. He adores playing with his nieces and spending time with his mother and siblings. The entire family is preparing to move from Las Vegas to Colorado to continue their journey together.

It has been an utmost privilege and joy to reunite Kane with his family. We hope this story of Kane gives hope, comfort, strength to our unhoused friends, and inspires many more reunions!
