Debórah and Angela, Part One: The Nest that Holds the Egg
Author, Allison Peart | 11/15/2021
Sensing a call to help and support others, Debórah had long wanted to volunteer before she randomly discovered Miracle Messages through the evening news. Starting off as a monthly donor, Debórah was pleasantly surprised to personally interact with Miracle Messages’ founder Kevin Adler, and promised him to volunteer with Miracle Friends after her retirement. In 2021, Debórah fulfilled her promise, and immediately “knew that this was gonna be something special.”
Thanks to committed, daily interaction, it wasn’t long before Debórah bonded deeply with her friend Angela, sensing deep reserves of strength in the woman who would become a dear friend. “Her openness, I think, is what really made everything in this relationship start out so easily,” says Debórah, “the transparency that she is willing to have . . . just drops me to my knees.” Debórah shares that Angela’s vulnerability and strength was more than endearing; it cemented Debórah’s sense of responsibility. “This is a commitment,” says Debórah, not personal entertainment or socialization. “This is for this woman, who daily has to navigate this tremendous uphill climb every day.” Cognizant of the struggles Angela daily endures, Debórah treasures the opportunity to provide some level of support: “I’m here today to be the nest to hold her heart.”
Though Debórah knows she was made for this work, it is rarely easy. Debórah shares that when overwhelmed with worries about Angela’s well-being, she tries to remind herself of the little things she can do to help. “You can only handle what’s in front of you,” Debórah wisely advises, “I am just ears, and a heart, and support for her.” Ultimately, Debórah’s experience with Miracle Friends emphasizes the power of sincere relationships. “Having a voice that’s not part of her current world is important,” Debórah says firmly. “People find you for a reason. When they need you.”
