Nelly & Marty: The Beginning of a Friendship

Author, Veronica Garrick | 4/19/2022

“He is one of the most friendly people I know, always generous and asking how I’m doing. We check in and talk about current events, politics, sports, and anything on his mind” -Nelly

Nelly is our San Francisco General Manager who does outreach in downtown San Francisco. One day during her outreach, she met Marty. Marty is 62 years old and has been struggling with housing for what he said was a “long time,” her guess is that it’s been at least 10 years. It has been at least 10 years since the loss of his parents which is when housing became unstable for him. Nelly shared our Miracle Friends program with him, and he has been a participant with us ever since.

Marty and Nelly developed a closer relationship after he joined our program, she sees him at least three times a week when she’s doing her outreach and always tries to connect him with other services that he can benefit from. Their relationship is not one sided either, Nelly said that he cares for his fellow humans and helps her find other unhoused friends that are looking to reconnect with their families through our Reunion Services.

Since joining Miracle Friends, Marty has developed a friendship with Nelly and his Miracle Friend, Tars. He is just one of our amazing unhoused friends who Nelly has the pleasure of getting to know and help along the way. Thank you Nelly for being a friend to Marty and all the work you do at Miracle Messages, and thank you Marty for trusting us.
